PUBLICATIONS

Within the world of print projects, I always enjoy working on PUBLICATIONS: magazines, directories, catalogues, etc. It doesn't matter whether it is a saddle-stitched, perfect-bound, or spiral-bound publication - I enjoy the process of layout and pagination. These are the things I have experience with in regards to the design and production of printed publications:
- Flowing in data from spreadsheets, documents, and other sources
- Knowing when to use a page-layout program, as opposed to a vector program or a raster-editing program
- Started with Quark and PageMaker. Have used Adobe InDesign for 22 years. Also currently learning Affinity Publisher 2.
- Creating/using style sheets that keep the typeface usage consistent
- Usage of InDesign Tables
- Setting and Exporting Bleed Settings and Crop-Marks
- Understanding the margins and gutters (and that all type should be within the "Live Area")
- Resolving any low-res images or images that use RGB color-space before going to print
- Managing fonts for the document. Outlining fonts in specific situations where there could be any chance for misinterpretation of the typeface.
- Set-up of Master Pages for the overall document
- Experience setting up large documents over 200+ pages, with multiple layers for versioning
- Usage of layers to create versions of a document. Stick with straight-black on the plate-changes to save money on press (when possible).
- Creation and Management of a Table of Contents and Index.
- Fixing broken links in a large document doesn't scare me. In fact, sometimes you NEED to re-organize your folder structure to clean up your files, and breaking links and re-linking them can be necessary. This is why I also try to keep my linked files organized from the beginning of a document.
- Parts: Front Cover, Introduction, Content, Conclusions, References, Back Cover
- The total page-count of saddle-stitched documents must be divisible by four.
- Appropriate usage of Headlines, Subheadings, Body Text, and other styles
- Knowledge of stock photography usage: Rights Managed, Royalty-Free, Public Domain (there are other distinctions, but those are the main groups)
- Purchase of stock photography from the major stock sites and micro stock sites / also usage of public domain images
- Color-correcting images in RGB, then converting to CMYK only AFTER color-correction has been completed.
- Placing appropriate image credits throughout a document
- Usage of borders, drop-shadows, and other embellishments when they are needed or stylistically appropriate
- Knowledge about how to properly export PDFs with settings for print
- Experienced at collecting the fonts, links, and native file for print vendors
- Worked with a product manager and a copywriter/editor in a draft process
- Very familiar with editing marks and can read the toughest chicken-scratch from editors
- Specific usage of glyphs when needed
- Professional usage of text wraps
- Attending press-checks for quality-control as well as education
- Checking proofs for printing errors as well as design/production errors
- Experience sending out print jobs for bid with various vendors, and leveraging those options for the best quality, price, and timeframe
- General typography knowledge, and font management
- Meeting with print vendors to be aware of what paper stock is currently available
- For digital publications, placing and managing the URL hyperlinks
